About David Belke

DAVID BELKE fills many different roles in the theatre: performer, producer, designer, teacher, award winning playwright. His first full length play was produced for the 1990 Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival, the largest theatre festival in North America. Since then he has written a new play for each subsequent year becoming one the Fringe's mainstays and one of the city's favorite playwrights. 2009 marked his twentieth consecutive premiere for the festival.

David's plays have been performed across Canada, as well as in the United States, England, Northern Ireland, India, Ghana and Greece. David currently works as resident playwright with Edmonton's Shadow Theatre where he is also in charge of new play development. Shadow Theatre usually produces one of David's plays a year, either a premiere or a remount. A multiple Sterling Award winner, David also received prestigious Samuel French Inc.'s Canadian Playwrights' Award for 2000 and they have since published four of his plays.

Active in Edmonton's theatre community, David currently serves as the Alberta regional representative for the national council of the Playwrights Guild of Canada and is vice president of the board for Alberta Playwrights Network.

David's Reviews

“David Belke may quietly have become the best playwright in the country.”
NeWest Review

"It's nice to walk into a show, confident that you're about to be entertained by a master."
Edmonton Journal

"David Belke Has written more than 30 plays over the last 17 years and while many of them riff off the work of famous authours... their sparkiling humour and warm, humane tone are singularly, unmistakably Belke-esque."
See Magazine

"David Belke is a playwright of astonishing reach. He made his name writing light comic works for the Fringe and over the years has proven adept at all sorts of subjects from the light Shakespearian travesty of The Maltese Bodkin to the Sterling award winning biographical drama, The Science of Disconnection."
Edmonton Sun
